E-Commerce Platform Background Requirements
Amazon: Main image requires pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255). Product must occupy 85-95% of the image area. No watermarks, no text, no borders. Secondary images can have any background.Shopify: No mandated background color. Consistent backgrounds across a product catalog look more professional. White or light grey is standard.
Etsy: No background requirement. Lifestyle shots (product in use) often outperform white-background shots in Etsy search.
Flipkart / Meesho (India): Main image requires white background for most categories, similar to Amazon requirements.
The Full Workflow: Phone Photo to Amazon-Ready
Step 1: Take the product photoFor best background removal results:
- Use a distinct background color (NOT white — white backgrounds make it harder for the AI to segment light-colored products)
- Blue, green, or dark grey backgrounds give the model the clearest foreground/background separation
- Even lighting with no harsh shadows
- Fill the frame — the product should occupy at least 50% of the image area
Upload to the Background Remover. The U2-Net model classifies each pixel and generates a segmentation mask. Download the transparent PNG.
Step 3: Inspect the edges
Open the transparent PNG against a dark background. Check that product edges are clean and key details are preserved.
Step 4: Add the required background
For Amazon (white background): open in Canva, create a white 1:1 canvas, place the product, scale to fill 85-90% of the frame, download as JPEG. Or open in Windows Paint — transparent areas automatically become white when saved as JPEG.
Step 5: Resize to platform specs
Amazon main images: minimum 1000x1000px, up to 10000x10000px. Use the Image Resizer to hit 2000x2000px.
